FORGE COMMUNITY HISTORY AND PURPOSE

What is Forge?
What is Forge?

The Forge Community is the largest non-commercial, peer-to-peer network of single family office executives in the United States. Forge was built by and for family offices — everything we do is in service of this growing industry. We connect 800+ members on our platform and have relationships with 47 single family office groups.

How did the Forge Community get started?
How did the Forge Community get started?

In 2011, Fidelity invited eight single family office executives who were leaders of self-organized regional groups to participate in a live forum to share ideas. Fidelity knew single family offices valued advice and insight from fellow family office leaders above most other sources of information, but they had trouble finding each other due to the high importance placed on privacy and confidentiality in their field. The feedback from the initial gathering was so strong that Fidelity committed to continue its efforts.

In 2018, the opportunity had grown so much we decided to formalize our efforts under the Forge Community LLC. We rolled our organization into Fidelity Labs, Fidelity Investments’ in-house fintech incubator to help us accelerate.

Today, the Forge Community exists to serve the single family office industry through enabling connections, curating relevant, high-caliber industry content, and establishing standards and best practices to move the industry forward.

Does Forge stand for anything?
Does Forge stand for anything?

Forge is not an acronym, so it doesn't stand for anything in that sense. However, we do stand for our mission, vision, and values which are based on direct input from community members.

What is the Forge Community and Fidelity Investments relationship?

The Forge initiative began in Fidelity Family Office Services in 2011. In 2018, Forge became the Forge Community LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of FMR, LLC. Today, Forge is backed by Fidelity Labs, Fidelity Investments' in-house incubator for fintech startups and innovations. Fidelity has a long history of meeting the unique needs of family offices and helping family office leaders navigate any problems they may have. With Fidelity Labs' support, Forge will continue to be a respected organization in service of the family office industry.

What does Forge do in the family office industry?
What does Forge do in the family office industry?

First and foremost, the Forge Community provides peer-to-peer connections for single family office executives. In an industry that values privacy above all, our community is invitation-only. Our single family office only environment allows them to share ideas and advice with those who face similar challenges. Forge seeks to set industry standards and benchmarks, provide high-quality content relevant to the industry, and create connection opportunities through events and digital experiences.

Wins since our founding in 2011:

  • We have identified and built the largest single family office community in the industry, with 800+ members on our platform, cultivating connection among 47 family office groups with connections to 1,700+ offices. No other community or service can foster the depth of network that Forge has helped to cultivate among existing family offices.
  • In 2015, we launched our first annual benchmarking study on compensation trends in the family office industry. We had over 216 individual responses on this study, which was unprecedented in the industry. Since 2015, we have continued to grow our network, following our initial compensation study with a 2017 study and a 2019 study. Our 2019 study had 323 individual responses reporting on compensation practices for nearly 500 positions in family offices.
  • We’ve also held two summits for our community, each with over 75 attendees. Each summit contained three days of educational sessions and networking, all in a 100% non-commercial environment. Our 2018 summit included a masterclass on gender intelligence, and our 2019 summit included a design thinking masterclass.
  • We've built a secure, intuitive online platform based directly on the needs of our community. The platform has one purpose: to seamlessly connect family office leaders and groups across the country in an environment where they can learn and grow. The platform houses the events calendar and Essential Education library, among other things.

The Forge Community platform simplifies your search. Whether you are looking for industry events, thoughtful content on family issues, recommendations and advice from your peers, or just an opportunity to catch up with your family office groups, the platform has everything you need in one place.

  • Curated content: Our Content Committee helps us curate the most valuable industry content. There is no pay-to-play model with Forge — if the content doesn't meet the needs of the community, it won't show up in our feed.
  • Your network and groups: All members of Forge can choose to participate and network nationally, or just within their family office group. Whatever you choose, you'll have it all in one place, from the group member directory to file sharing to conversations just in your group to make it easy for you to stay connected.
  • Peer conversations: We've heard it from you — the best way to learn is from each other. The Forge Community wall allows you to engage in topics of your choice. All conversations are tagged for topics, searchable by keyword, and moderated to ensure that they meet the standards set out by our community membership pledge.
  • Industry calendar: We're working to build out the most comprehensive family office industry event calendar you can find. Our calendar includes events your peers are attending, open family office group meetings, industry-leading events, and more.

We have done four benchmarking studies to date. Three of our benchmarking studies have been on compensation trends in the single family office industry. Our most recent study was on the costs of running a family office and had 187 responses, which is groundbreaking for a study of this kind. Our first study, launched in 2015, had over 216 individual responses, which was unprecedented in the industry. As our network grew, we did our second and third studies in 2017 and 2019. Our 2019 study had 323 individual responses reporting on compensation practices for 500 positions in family offices.
